NEEDTOBREATHE OPEN DOORS TO SECOND NEEDTOBREATHE MEDICAL CENTER IN NICARAGUA

Friday, January 26, 2018 - 8:00am

South Carolina rock band NEEDTOBREATHE recently traveled to Jinotega, Nicaragua, to help open the doors to the new state-of-the-art NEEDTOBREATHE Medical Center in partnership with OneWorld Health on January 24, 2018. The medical center was funded entirely by donations from fans, ticket sales and proceeds from the band’s celebrity golf tournament, the NEEDTOBREATHE Classic, which takes places annually in Charleston, SC. Since the beginning of their partnership with OneWorld Health, NEEDTOBREATHE has raised over $1 million for the organization.

The NEEDTOBREATHE Medical Center in Jinotega is projected to serve more than 160,000 patients, 60% of which live on less than $2 per day, from both the urban population and the mountainous region surrounding Jinotega over the next 20 years.

“We’re extremely proud to open the 2nd NEEDTOBREATHE Medical Center in Nicaragua. We’re humbled by the opportunity to have an impact on the families and individuals seeking medical care in Jinotega and Tola. This is a career highlight for us, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the work of OneWorld Health in this region and to our fans who have supported this effort through their donations,” said NEEDTOBREATHE.

This is the second medical center the band has opened in Nicaragua—the first opening in Tola in January 2017. The medical center has served more than 4,000 patients in its first year – with the highest patient volume of any OneWorld Health facility in its first quarter. Prior to the openings of the clinics in Tola and Jinotega, the surrounding communities had access to only small public health clinics with no imaging services, no laboratory services, a limited pharmacy, and no medical specialists.

Donations to the second NEEDTOBREATHE Medical Center and OneWorld Health can be made here.

ABOUT ONEWORLD HEALTH
Our vision is to see impoverished communities take ownership in a sustainable healthcare model, so that they become empowered to bring about long-term change and tangible improvements in their health and quality of life. Our mission is to provide quality, affordable healthcare to people in need. We have developed a model that provides affordable healthcare to the communities who need it most and does not require ongoing support to keep the doors open. Each OneWorld Health medical center offers a full scope of healthcare services to the community, delivered by trained nationals and offered at a price point that is affordable to the overwhelming majority of the population. Patient fees offset the costs of running the clinic, eventually meeting or exceeding the total monthly operating costs.
